Like a Dream

Leona walks over to her and gives her a big hug and a kiss. “So what do you think?” she whispers.

“There are no words,” Amelia replies with a smile.

Even though Amelia is pleased, she can’t help but feel guarded and won’t fully trust her aunt. However, for now she plans to enjoy herself. They both look around and take in the amazing festivities. When Brady walks into the backyard and waves at them, Leona runs to greet him with a huge smile on her face. Amelia stares off into the night while their guests engross themselves in conversation. Standing there alone makes her think of her parents. She wants to break down but tries to hold back the tears and stay strong. She strolls over to the cone flowers and quickly wipes her face.

“Okay, everyone quiet down!” Leona shouts.

Amelia turns around just as Navid is bringing her a glass of sparkling apple cider. The noise dies down as they wait for Leona to speak.

“Before the party gets fully underway, I would just like to propose a toast to my beautiful niece! I want to say happy birthday, and may this be the best sweet sixteen ever! To Amelia!” she yells.

“To Amelia!” the guests holler.

Amelia holds up her glass and smiles convincingly as everyone cheers and claps. She knows if she utters one word she’ll be consumed by tears. After Leona’s toast, the music starts playing and people began to dance and munch on the mouthwatering food. To keep her mind busy, Amelia tries to mingle and talk to some of the guests, but every now and then she looks over her shoulder to see if Aaron showed. It saddens her that he still hasn’t come, but she refuses to acknowledge that he probably won’t show up. The very thought makes her more depressed. She exhales deeply and grabs a plate of fruit. After finishing the entire plate, she no longer knows what to do with herself.

Maybe his girlfriend put up a good fight and demanded they don’t come. The thought of Sadie intervening makes her sick, but she doesn’t blame her. If it were her, she would keep him all to herself too. She walks inside the house and peeps out the front door, but to her disappointment he’s not there. She forces herself to head back out and try to enjoy herself, when she sees Navid break away from his guest. He grabs her hand for a dance. Amelia pulls away, but he tugs her toward the dance floor. Finally, she gives in.
