Like a Dream

The same man and a mysterious woman are arguing over the puppies.

“Fine, I will give you one, but the older one stays with me!” he demands.

The lady has a mask on her face. All Amelia can see is long, curly hair. The woman is wearing a cerulean-blue dress with a white sash.

“No! I want them both, and you will give me what I want or else!” she screams.

The man grabs her by the arms. “Or else what? There is nothing you can do! I will win!”

He’s angry, but his personality is genuine. He wants to protect his puppies and will fight for them no matter what. He turns around to call the police, when she picks up a hammer from the counter and bashes his skull in. He drops to the floor with blood gushing from the back of his head. She runs to the faucet and washes the hammer and shoves it in her purse. Amelia screams as loud as her lungs will allow, but she can’t hear a sound. The echoes of their voices are cemented in her head. The screaming and the violence send chills all over her. She trembles from head to toe with fear and doesn’t know what to do. She bangs on the window, hoping someone will hear her, but her actions are useless. She’s invisible.

A younger puppy comes out of the bedroom and sees his owner lying on the floor covered in blood. He whimpers and yelps loudly while licking his master’s face. Surprised to see him awake, the masked woman runs over to the whining puppy and picks him up.

She rubs his head. “It’s okay, shh. Your daddy was trying to hurt me. You don’t want Mommy to die, do you? I didn’t think so,” she says.

The puppy jumps out of her arms and continues to cry over his owner, barking to try to awaken him. But the man won’t move. The woman kneels down next to his body and empties his pockets. She shoves everything into her black purse and stands there, looking around the room. She paces back and forth and then races to the garage and comes back with a large shovel and a trash bag. As the rage leaves her body, the mask disappears, but her face is still a blur. Amelia can’t decipher what she looks like and everything is moving at such a fast pace. The woman is all over the place gathering the supplies she needs, like she’s on a mission.

She motions for the puppy to help her carry the dead man out of the house. The puppy cries and protests by not moving, but she demands his help. He’s so afraid of her that he does what she asks. She grabs the dead man’s arms while the puppy follows behind with the man’s pant leg clutched between his teeth. Amelia slowly walks from the side of the house and stays on their trail as they stroll into the desert. Finally, the woman comes to a halt and drops the body on the ground as if it were trash.
