“Yeah, I can understand that. I can’t imagine his pain, but you seemed to keep him happy.”
“He was happy. Listen, by no means am I dismissing his actions, but his father has a hold over him, even in death. Cash gets nightmares every single night. He’s miserable inside, but through it all I know he loves me and Amelia very much. What you don’t see is his devious sister, who’s done everything in her power to ruin our marriage. She knows how to get in his head and tell him horrible lies. The fight started because she told him I was having an affair with a coworker. Then the witch had the nerve to send flowers to the house, pretending they were from the guy. It sent him right over the edge! Then after everything, she was going to kill me, when Cash rushed in front of me.”
“Oh my! She was going to kill you? I’m so sorry,” Cora replies, shaking her head. “Well, on that note, let’s cook some dinner and have a glass of wine. You look like you’re overdue for a drink.”
“I don’t know, Cora. I don’t want you to get in any trouble for having me here. Maybe I should just head back into town.”
“Heck no! I’m not letting you stay anywhere but here. I’m all alone out here anyway, and I would be devastated if something happened to you. You are the sweetest person I’ve ever met. I want you to stay here with me until everything gets sorted out. No matter how long it takes.”
“Are you sure? I feel like I should get back and find a way to help Amelia.”
“Honey, Amelia will be just fine. She can handle anything. Besides, she wouldn’t want you to come back home just to land in jail. Stay here and wait it out. When the time is right, you’ll know. In the meantime, just make yourself comfy.”
With a huge smile, Alexandria gratefully hugs Cora and agrees, even though she has no intention of staying long. She plans on leaving first thing in the morning, because she can’t just sit and wait for a disaster to strike.
“So what now?” Alexandria asks.
Cora takes her hand and leads her toward one of the bedrooms.
“You can stay in this room here. It has a lot of space. Just make yourself at home.”
Alexandria slowly walks into the room and squeezes Cora’s hand in appreciation for her hospitality. “Cora, I can’t thank you enough. You have no idea the gratitude I feel right now.”
“Oh nonsense. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Now let’s get something to eat.”
While eating dinner, they decide to watch some TV. The moment they turn on the television, Alexandria’s face is staring back at them on the news.
“Oh no!” Alexandria screams. This is worse than I thought. I gotta go now! She jumps up and runs to the door.
Cora hurriedly turns off the TV. “It’s all right. You’ll be fine. Don’t freak out on me. You can’t be too surprised, Alexandria. It was only a matter of time, right? Stay calm. You’ll be okay.”
“How can I stay calm? I won’t be able to go out in public anymore! What if someone saw me get into your car?”
