“What do you think her decision will be?” Georgia asked.
“If she’s smart, she’ll do what we say. What choice does she have? If she decides to keep this baby, she won’t have anything, no money or means to take of it,” he replied.
“Collin, maybe we should just help her. I mean, yes she made a big mistake, but we have the money to help her with the baby,” Georgia pleaded.
“Absolutely not! Trust me, Georgia, she’ll thank us when she graduates from college and meets a respectable man who wants to marry her.”
“I don’t know, Collin. Once her mind is made up she can be just as stubborn as you.”
“Yes, she is just like me, isn’t she?” Collin laughed. “She’ll do the right thing and get the abortion, I’m sure of it.”
Alexandria quietly closed her door, having heard enough. Just as she was about to lie down, she could hear them coming up the stairs. She quickly threw her housecoat on and sat on the edge of the bed, preparing for Armageddon.
“Alexandria, are you awake, honey?” Georgia yelled.
“Come on in, guys. I’m awake,” she nervously answered.
“Good morning, how did you sleep?” Collin asked smugly.
“Pretty good, Dad, considering that awesome conversation we had last night.” He rolled his eyes.
Georgia walked over and hugged her. “Let’s just put last night behind us and move on. How does that sound?” she offered.
“That sounds great, Mom.”
“So why don’t you get dressed, and we’ll drive you to the clinic and rid you of your situation,” Collin murmured. Alexandria’s head dropped to the floor.
“No. I’ve decided to keep my baby, and I hope you guys can understand and respect my decision.”
“Respect your decision! It’s not a smart decision to respect! Do you understand that this is ruining your life?” he declared as he paced back and forth.
“No, Dad! Getting rid of my child for you would ruin my life. It’s my choice and that’s final!” she demanded angrily.
“Please, Alexandria, we just want what’s best for you,” Georgia pleaded.
“No, Mother, you just want what’s best for you.”
Collin’s eyes grew big as he balled his fists. She knew that going against him would drive him mad. But she wasn’t backing down.
“How dare you! Everything we’ve said or done has been to protect you. Why can’t you see that?” he asked.
Alexandria rose up from her bed and faced the door with tears in her eyes.
“The only thing I can see is that you two refuse to listen to what I want for once. You never even asked me if I’m feeling okay, or if the baby’s okay.” She turned around and studied them. “What’s the matter with you two? Since when did you become so heartless?”
“I’ve heard enough. I’m giving up on you. You do whatever you want,” Collin grunted.
Hearing those words from her father felt like a million knives were stabbing her in the heart. Feeling overwhelmed, she walked out of her bedroom.
