Like a Dream

Look at that cover design!

He told her stories about his father, Abraham, who sounded like a horrible person. He also told her his mother, Grace, passed away when he was little, and after her death his father became cruel and abusive. Abraham started drinking and beat him for every little thing he did. He couldn’t handle his grief and needed someone to blame for her death. He told Cash that maybe if he wasn’t such a bad son his mother would still be alive. Alexandria felt sorry for him because it seemed like he’d never gotten the love he deserved, especially after losing his mother. She told him that it was too bad they couldn’t choose their own lives. Instead they had to deal with the hand they were dealt, whether it was really good or really bad.

After hearing his story, she realized why they’d fallen in love so quickly. They were both missing something in their lives. She grew up rich and alone in many ways, and he grew up abused and alone. Yet there they were, two empty people waiting for fulfillment. When Cash had graduated high school, Abraham wouldn’t let him go to college and insisted that he got a job to pull his own weight. Before Cash could reason with his father, Abraham had already gotten him the construction job in San Antonio and forced him to go. If there was one thing Alexandria could thank Abraham for, it was that he got Cash the job that would allow them to meet and fall in love.

After three months of dating in secret, they wanted to take their relationship farther by making love. Cash went to work one morning and asked his friend to cover for him so that he could leave early. Alexandria went to her first class and after that she and Cash met up and went to his place. He was sharing it with his coworkers and since they were working, he knew they’d have privacy.

They were both nervous yet unafraid. They embraced every kiss and touch as they enjoyed each other’s company. Afterward, they lay together and relished in their intimate moment. She was so in love with him that it was scary and not safe because she no longer cared about who she was or was supposed to be. He was all she wanted and needed.

They were in complete bliss for the next two weeks. Everyday when Cash finished working, he waited for her to come out of her last class of the day. She convinced her parents to let her stay for study groups so that she could spend more time with him. They made out every chance they got and wanted to make love again, but something always came up. After another week went by, they planned another special day together. That morning, Cash was already waiting at their special meeting place with a worried glare. She walked up to him and smiled, but he was so deep in thought that he didn’t notice her.
