Like a Dream

Look at that cover design!

She looks back to see if the gate opened, but it’s gone. Within the blink of an eye, she finds herself back at the river. What’s going on here? Why can’t I go through? She doesn’t know why, but she needs to get inside the gate. She senses that something is waiting for her on the other side. But who is keeping her away? Why? She angrily rushes through the vines again, determined to get back to the gate, but instead she ends up in a dark swamp.

“No! I need to get back to the gate!” she screams. She trudges forward, taking in her new surroundings. Oddly shaped brown and black trees are casted over her with sharp edges reaching out, resembling claws. She stumbles past the dark shadows and piles of dead leaves only to land in front of a large buzzard. The flesh-eating creature stares at her as it feasts on a dead possum. She quietly walks past it while concentrating on not slipping on the slimy ground. The fog is so thick she can’t see ahead, and the smell of rotting flesh and spoil fills her nostrils, forcing her to her knees. She covers her mouth and squeezes her eyes shut to keep from vomiting. Cah! Cah! An unkindness of Ravens flies toward her and knocks her backwards into slimy goop. She tries to keep calm and focus but all she can see is darkness. Suddenly, she feels the warmth of someone’s touch on her hand. She looks up and sees a beautiful boy. She rubs her eyes and stares at the person standing before her. He looks like a statue, crafted by the best sculptors in the world. She’s so enamored she’s afraid to blink. No way he’s real.

She looks at him from head to toe, drinking in every detail. His short curly black hair barely touches his face and his smooth skin looks like liquid caramel. She glowers at his bright green eyes, finding it difficult to look away. His warm smile reveals a small dimple on his left cheek. Everything about him reminds her of the Gods from Greek Mythology. The fact that he’s wearing nothing except a pair of white shorts is something she can’t ignore. Her attraction for him is growing stronger and stronger as her face flushes with heat. She’s never felt like this before. But somehow, in all the strangeness, she knows he feels the same, and it leaves her baffled. What do I say to him? He holds out his hand for her, and without hesitation she takes it…
